Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 11, 2025
At Pipit, we believe your voice and your data should stay yours. This privacy policy explains how we handle your information when you use Pipit, a voice-to-text application for macOS.
TL;DR: Everything runs locally on your Mac. We don't collect, store, or transmit your data. No cloud processing. No tracking. No analytics.
>Data Collection
We don't collect your data. Pipit processes all audio transcription locally on your device using open-source models. Your voice recordings and transcriptions never leave your Mac.
The app stores your transcription history locally on your device for your convenience. This data is stored in a local database and is never transmitted to any external servers.
The only exception: If you explicitly enable "AI Enhancement" and provide your own OpenRouter API key, transcribed text (not audio) is sent to OpenRouter to improve quality. This is disabled by default, completely optional, and under your control.
>Local Processing
All speech-to-text processing happens entirely on your Mac using on-device models. No internet connection required for transcription, no data sent to cloud services (unless you enable optional AI enhancement), and no external API calls for core transcription.
>Permissions
- Microphone (Required): Records your voice for transcription.
- Accessibility (Required): Global hotkey monitoring and automatic text insertion. Does not read other apps' content or spy on activity.
- Screen Recording (Optional): Captures system audio only (no video or screenshots).
You can revoke any permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
>Data Storage
Voice Recordings: Audio is held in memory only during processing, then immediately deleted after transcription completes. Audio never leaves your Mac and is not saved to disk unless you explicitly choose to save it.
Transcription History: Stored locally on your Mac. Includes transcribed text, timestamps, and duration. Automatic pruning keeps the most recent entries, but pinned items are never automatically deleted.
Settings: Your preferences and settings are stored locally on your Mac.
API Keys (If Provided): If you enable AI enhancement and provide your own OpenRouter API key, it's stored securely in macOS Keychain. Keys are never transmitted to us.
You can delete individual entries or clear all data through the app's settings at any time.
>AI Enhancement (Optional)
This is completely optional and disabled by default. If you enable AI enhancement:
- You provide your own OpenRouter API key
- After local transcription completes, the transcribed text (not audio) is sent to OpenRouter
- OpenRouter processes the text to improve grammar, remove filler words, etc.
- Improved text is sent back to your Mac
- You are charged by OpenRouter according to their pricing
What's sent: Transcribed text, optional context (clipboard content, window title) if you enable "Context Capture," and your API key for authentication.
What's NOT sent: Audio recordings (never transmitted), your settings, information about other transcriptions, or anything we can see.
OpenRouter has their own privacy policy at openrouter.ai/privacy. We have no control over or access to OpenRouter's systems. You can disable AI enhancement anytime in Settings.
>Third-Party Services
Pipit does not use any third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising services. No Google Analytics, Sentry, Mixpanel, Firebase, or similar services. There is no code that phones home, reports crashes, tracks usage, or sends any data about you.
Model Downloads: The app downloads open-source models for offline transcription. Your IP address is visible during download (standard for any web request), but no personal data is shared.
>Data Retention
To prevent unlimited storage growth, Pipit automatically prunes old transcription entries, keeping the most recent ones. Pinned items are never automatically deleted.
You can delete individual entries or clear all data through the app's settings at any time.
>Children's Privacy
Pipit does not collect data from anyone, including children. Since all data stays on the user's Mac and is never transmitted to us, there are no special concerns for children under 13. Age rating: 4+ (suitable for all ages).
>Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
